Charles Matkin

Charles is a third-generation yogi originally from Vancouver, British Columbia who was formally instructed in yoga and meditation when he was five years old. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Chemistry from Maharishi International University, which included training in Ayurveda. He brings to his teaching the lightness of a dancer's grace and the wit of a comic. His multi-faceted yoga training includes teacher certification from Yoga Zone, Jivamukti, and extensive training in the Iyengar approach to yoga.

Yoga Journal named Charles one of the nation’s top 21 yoga instructors under 40 and the New York Daily News listed him as a “New Yorker to watch," and he is regularly asked to present at their conferences, including their central location of Estes Park, CO, as well as Omega and Kripalu. He has conducted corporate classes for Citibank and Chase Manhattan and has an extensive following on the upper East and West sides of Manhattan and in Westchester and Putnam Counties.

Charles is also known for his teaching on the Yoga Zone TV shows and over 30 yoga videos & DVDs.  His approach to instruction is well rounded, ranging from therapeutic classes, to popular & active classes, to accredited yoga teacher trainings.  Some of the studios he has conducted teacher trainings for include Yoga Zone, Haelth, Be Yoga, Yoga Works, Satsang Yoga Studio, and Stepping Stones Yoga, a studio he opened and ran from 2011 - 2012.

He has been on the faculty of Omega, Kripalu and The Open Center. He currently teaches privately in New York City, Connecticut and around the Cold Springs, New York area.

Charles’ particular passion in his practice and teaching is yoga therapy as a complement to Western medicine for those who suffer from diseases of the mind and body. His knowledge and passion for precision and alignment coupled with his compassion and uncanny sense of humor make for a uniquely balanced experience.
